Prince: Prince: MPLSOUND (Preview)
Prince announced in early 2009 that he'd be releasing two solo albums in 2009, one guitar oriented, and one pop song oriented. MPLSOUND is the poppier album, focusing on vintage Prince. Although it isn't all standard Prince fare-- Q-Tip drops by in the form of a guest verse on one of the tracks.

As a follow-up to his 2007 album, Planet Earth, Prince announced he'd be releasing two solo albums in 2009, including Lotus Flower, an album the Purple One promised would feature a lot of guitar heroics. Prince has always been great on guitar (as evidenced by his Super Bowl performance), but he hasn't really let his inner Hendrix out at album length. Among the songs on the album is a cover of Tommy James and the Shondells' "Crimson and Clover."

Clipse: Clipse: Till the Casket Drops (Preview)

On the first track on Road To Till The Casket Drops mixtape that came out in advance of Clipse’s third LP, Till The Casket Drops, Pusha T says “they say the third time’s the charm,” and for Clipse, it’d better be. After releasing an excellent debut in 2002 (Lord Willin’) after being jerked around for five years as their “unofficial” debut Exclusive Audio Footage sat on Elektra’s shelves (it’s available widely on the net), Clipse were again caught in label limbo when Jive kept shelving and pushing back their stellar sophomore album, 2006’s Hell Hath No Fury.

 

Then Clipse got dropped, signed to Columbia, cut an official posse record (2008’s Clipse Presents: Re-Up Gang), and began work on Till The Casket Drops, which for the first time, features production work from producers not named the Neptunes. Scott Storch, Rick Rubin, Kanye West, The Hitmen, and Swizz Beatz are slated to contribute beats, and the subject matter will almost certainly pertain to white powder.

Never one to turn down a right hook to a dead horse, Lily Allen is now threatening to publish Katy Perry's phone number on her Facebook page. The UK songstress is still angry over Katy's previous remarks calling herself a fatter Amy Winehouse, but a thinner Lily Allen. Perry tried to make nice with a public apology, but all was not forgotten as British news the Sun reveals that Allen will release the digits if another negative remark is made.  While Katy Perry doesn't appear to have any trouble selling records, Lily Allen should remember the sudden success of Mike Jones after revealing his phone number. Brian Eno: Brian Eno sounds off on Israel's Gaza attacks

Vociferous, rabble-rousing sentiments criticizing Israel and placing Palestine in the underdog role have been made at a protest rally by...Brian Eno? What is this, a rock Mad Lib? Proving that you don't have to be Bruce Springsteen or Zach de la Rocha to make a political statement, the godfather of ambient music made an appearance at a protest in London's Trafalgar Square last Saturday, tossing verbal barbs at Israel for what he calls their "experiment in provocation."

 

"Israel is pretending to be a victim in a situation in which they are the oppressor," opined Eno, adding "It's tragic that a country formed in the ashes of the Holocaust should act in this way." Eno encouraged all within earshot to ratchet up the level of opposition to Israel's actions, saying "This is a mass movement, let's keep it going." Rumors that Eno's next act of insurrection would be a museum installation of cranky mood music could not be confirmed.

Black Lips: Black Lips: 200 Million Thousand (Preview)

Atlanta's favorite puerile punkers Black Lips have barely taken a day off since the release of their self-titled debut LP in 2003-- they've toured the world over (including Israel!), recorded four albums of increasing quality (the last one, 2007's Good Bad Not Evil is their magnum opus thus far), and cut a raucous live album recorded in all of its debauchery in Mexico (2007's Valientes Del Mundo Nuevo).

 

The band finally slowed down in late 2008-- they bought a practice space and recorded 200 Million Thousand, an album the band promised would be more melodic than its predecessors. First single "Starting Over" proves that-- its shambling, warbly chorus recalls any number of mid-'60s garage rock bands. The album features 13 other tracks, including one called "Big Black Baby Jesus of Today," and the band is hoping to get a member of Wu-Tang Clan on the album. Whether that pans out or not, the thought of it is enough.
