Noise Beat Propaganda Interview: SXSW 2010

Noise Beat PropagandaMuch like their hometown of Mexicali, Mexico, Noise Beat Propaganda's music straddles the border between two worlds. The band's hyperactive 2009 debut EP, 'We're in Love, Yeah Right,' features songs in both English and Spanish, jumping the line between structure and noise, familiar and peculiar. Before their first trip to SXSW, Spinner talked with bass player Jorge Caro about the importance of ice cold beer and his love of Ace of Bass, MC Hammer and all things '90s.

Describe your sound.

Well, I think we always try to keep some fun and fresh taste in our sound, something to have fun with or enjoy listening to it. It's kind of a mix of danceable rock with some catchy melodies and a peculiar punk female vocal on it.

How did your band form?

Actually, our band has gone through a long list of drummers, beginning in early 2007. It was just Leonel, our guitarist, and our first drummer Ezequiel J. They were just jamming and playing around, and after that they called me to do some jamming. We decided to add one more guitar, (and) we called Alex (our rhythm guitar player). We made some tunes ... but we needed the most important thing: the vocals. We always wanted a girl on vocals. We wanted to give a fresh touch to the band. At that time, there was a friend (Ana Torres) singing in a band called Cancer Bullet ... they were playing a lot in our local scene, but they had just broken up, so we decided to call her and try her to see if she fit in the band, and she did. By the end of 2007, we had a few tunes, and we threw a party to officially present the band in 2008. Since then, the band has been playing a lot ... and we releases our debut EP (last) summer.

Carolina Chocolate Drops Interview: SXSW 2010

Filed under: Concerts and Tours, Exclusive

Carolina Chocolate DropsCarolina Chocolate Drops, an all-black old-time string band from Durham, N.C., combine the traditional with the new to create a compelling musical experience. Dom Flemons, one of the group's three musicians -- who use a variety of instruments to play their tunes -- discusses the band's history, goals and why their music is both unique and common.

Describe your sound in your own words.

I would say the sound is an exuberance and joy of fiddle and banjo, the joy of American music. It's dance music and it's also sit down and listening music all at the same time.

How did your band form?

Our group got together at an event called the Black Banjo Gathering in North Carolina in April 2005. Now that was a one-time event on the black and African roots of the banjo. The three of us all came individually. We were all interested in old-time string band music of one kind or another before that, but the gathering was really the catalyst that started the smaller movement to create awareness about the black and African roots of the banjo and black participation in country music and string band and bluegrass music that you would associate with white people. That was how we started. We studied with a fellow called Joe Thompson, who's a 91-year-old black fiddler. We've learned a lot of his repertoire and we also incorporated a lot of jug band music, early jazz and early blues. That's the basic gist of it.
The Clutters Interview: SXSW 2010

The CluttersThey might hail from Nashville, but The Clutters are anything but country. Instead, the four-member band, comprised of Doug Lehmann, lead singer and guitarist, bassist Jake Rosswog, drummer Stephanie Filippini and Todd Kemp on keyboard, embraces the hallmarks of '60s garage rock with a fast-moving, toe-tapping indie flair. Lehmann talks to Spinner about returning to perform at SXSW, being a non-country band in Nashville and how the work of Truman Capote influenced the band's name.

Describe your sound.

We have two albums, and for the first two albums and since the beginning, I would always say The Sonics vs. The Pixies, a '60s garage rock-type thing vs. indie rock. We're getting ready to record another album in the next year, so there's definitely another element. I don't really know what that is yet.

How did the band get together?

Jake Rosswog and I have known each other since high school. We've been in two or three bands together and lived together. We met Stephanie through another friend. There's not really a grand story there. We got together, and just started playing.

Jacob's Ladder Interview: SXSW 2010

Jacob's LadderWhen it comes to the power-pop landscape, Miami-based trio Jacob's Ladder -- Oren Maisner, Sammy Gonzales and Brian Hernandez -- have made a habit of surrounding themselves with solid company. Since forming in 2002, they've shared stages with Fall Out Boy, The Audition and Forever The Sickest Kids, and have nearly 500 live under their belts. New Found Glory drummer Cyrus Bolooki produced their latest album, 'Ours for the Taking,' because he was a fan. But 2010 might prove to be the band's biggest year yet, as Jacob's Ladder gears up for its debut SXSW performance, followed by two months of live shows and a possible slot on the Warped Tour. Spinner caught up with bassist Sammy Gonzales before the band hit the road.

Describe your sound.

Straightforward, catchy, lots of harmonies, mixed with spacey progressions and break downs. If I had to compare us to bands, I'd say we're a good mix of Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters and Coheed and Cambria.

How did Jacob's Ladder form?

We've all known each other since we were in elementary school. Brian and Oren jammed all through the early years into high school. In high school, we were all part of a group called the Rock Ensemble. We just decided to start working together, and it's worked out pretty well so far.

The Coolness Interview: SXSW 2010

The CoolnessDescribing their sound as "disco beats, Casio keyboards, KISS-meets-'90s rave music," the members of The Coolness bring a fusion of rock and dance music to their performances. The guys bonded over a "love of Oasis, Jimi Hendrix, dance music and the Stone Roses." Originally from Portsmouth, England, the band now resides in London, and the band's vocalist, Chaz John Ross, and drummer, Eddie Lyons, talked to Spinner before heading to SXSW.

Describe your sound in your own words.

Chaz: Disco beats, Casio keyboards, KISS-meets-'90s rave music.

Eddie: Loud guitar, four crazy guys ripping up the rock 'n' roll telephone directory.

How did your band form?

Chaz and Eddie: We originate from Portsmouth, a.k.a. Pompey, which is a small island off the south coast of England, next to the Isle Wight Festival. It was once the most densely populated city in Europe and houses the world's largest Council Estate, Leigh Park. We all met at South Downs Art College more ten years ago. We now live in Methnal Green, a trendy part of East London.
Teenage Bottlerocket Interview: SXSW 2010

Teenage BottlerocketTeenage Bottlerocket, featured in Alternative Press magazine as a "Band You Need to Know in 2009," is bring their classic pop-punk sound to Austin's SXSW festival. Spinner caught up with singer/guitarist Ray Carlisle to discuss the origins of the TBR name, juggling the rock star lifestyle with a day job, and why TBR is "the cutest twin band since Nelson."

How did you guys get together?

Brandon and I used to play in a band called The Homeless Wonders, and we used to play with Kody's old band, The Lillingtons, all the time. Me and Brandon used to always play together, sort of like Alex and Eddie Van Halen -- we're the cutest twin band since Nelson. Miguel was just a punk rock kid playing in bands around Laramie and thumbing through his record collection. We have the best-friend lineup ... everything just worked out.

How did you get the name Teenage Bottlerocket?

Our first guitar player, Zach, who was in the band for, maybe, three months, came up with the name. It was based on a nickname that his dad had for this car he owned in high school. We just thought that it had the edge that we were looking for as far as the excitement of the name and then explanation of the sound -- explosive youthfulness and energy. But I might change my answer to something about the Wes Anderson movie, just because that's what everybody seems to think.

Boom Pam Interview: SXSW 2010

Boom PamWhat has an electric guitar, drums, a tuba and a loads of Mediterranean spice? Boom Pam! Together since 2003, the members of the Tel Aviv band recently finished their third record, which will be available in mid-2010, following their appearance at SXSW. Spinner caught up with Boom Pam's guitarist, Uri Kinrot, to discuss the group's unique sound (did we mention there's a tuba?), his vices and his week-long hiatus from vegetarianism, the cause of which, of course, is the SXSW music festival.

How did your band form?

About seven years ago, my roommate, Uzi, and I, started jamming together a lot. We knew a tuba player, Yuval "Tubi" Zolotov, from high school, so we decided to include a tuba, rather than a bass guitar. About a year ago, Uzi moved to another band, who we still play with often. Before he left, we added a drummer, Itamar Levy (The Kid). Upon Uzi's departure, Boom Pam became a trio, including a guitar, a tuba and drums.

How did you come up with the band name?

Boom Pam is a song we used to play, which was a big hit in Israel in 1969. It's a song by Aris San, a Greek immigrant to Israel, whose style was Greek via electric guitar.

DA C.O.D. Interview: SXSW 2010

DA C.O.D.The four members of the upbeat hip-hop group DA C.O.D. -- Lil J, S. Dot, Mr. Greezo and Tuk-Da-Gat -- will be heading to SXSW for the third time. Spinner recently spoke with Mr. Greezo about the group's return trip to the festival and DA C.O.D.'s plans for a new album release.

How would you describe your sound?

Soulful, Texas, international, gangster, conscious, hip-hop. C.O.D. is a more upbeat kind of tempo group. We have a real good live stage performance. We try to make a lot of uplifting-type of records. We definitely make it for the streets. We make music for college kids. We make music for a wide range of people that go to the club or really jam in their car.

How did the group form?

The group started in 2005, as far as the rap group. The C.O.D., which stands for the Circle of Death, is a neighborhood that S. Dot lived in, and Lil J and S. Dot grew up together. They've known each other since they were little kids. I showed up in the C.O.D. in 1999 and Tuk came around in 2000. That's just in this little neighborhood, where we met each other, we were hanging out, doin' all types of crazy things, and I was rappin' solo, and we just got together as a group after I got out of jail in 2005. Lil J and S. Dot were doing their own thing in the city. Since I rapped, it was natural for them to come to me. I put them on shows, and as time went on, we all got together. We put out our first collective mixed tape in 2007, and every year since then, we've dropped a new one. We've also put out other projects or what not.
