The Depreciation Guild: "My Chariot"

Thanks to two of this band's members' other project, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, blowing up last year, it's likely you will be hearing a lot more from the Depreciation Guild this year. Case in point: Pitchfork just premiered the first leak/single off the trio's upcoming Spirit Youth LP. "My Chariot" retains the spirt (no pun) of the band's chiptune/shoegaze foundation while providing a smoother, poppier, and altogether more uplifting sound. It will be interesting to hear how this fits into the rest of the album, especially because their debut, the very good In Her Gentle Jaws, was, like most shoegaze, a downer.

You can stream "My Chariot" at Pitchfork. Spirit Youth is due out May 18.

Florence and the Machine: "Dog Days Are Over" (2010 Video)

Now that Florence and the Machine has Brit Awards and an album that went to #1 in the UK, she's decided to remake her video for "Dog Days Are Over," complete with a freaky medieval geisha makeover for Florence herself, and some dancing smurf chicks. It's far too soon to call Florence Welch a diva, but it certainly looks like that's the direction in which she's headed.

Holy Fuck: Holy Fuck Announces New LP, 'Latin,' Via Chatroulette

When popular new chatting site Chatroulette isn't being used for nonsense and random oddball conversations, it's apparently become a new way to announce albums and stream new singles. Synthesizer enthusiasts/dance rockers Holy Fuck took to Chatroulette to hip fans to the band's upcoming album, Latin, and its first leak, "Latin America," that will appear in mp3 form next week. Latin is the band first's album since 2007's LP as well as the first to feature Holy Fuck's touring rhythm section.

"Latin America" is streaming now on Chatroulette. Latin is due out May 11.

John Lydon, Public Image Ltd.: Public Image Ltd. Will Head Back To Studio, Maybe, If They Get Some Money

The members of Public Image Ltd. intend on heading back to the studio to record some new songs after returning from their upcoming North American tour, frontman John Lydon has announced. A collection of new material would be the first PiL album since 1992's That What Is Not. Lydon, formerly known as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, told Billboard that the group has no set record company or distribution deal as of yet, though, which could throw a wrench into the plans. "The only way we can make money is the touring," he said, "and then we can make a new album. It's sort of like the old days of PiL, when the Pistols went kaput; I had to scrimp and scrape out of my own pocket. Not much has changed." Oh no? Might be time for a new haircut, buddy.

Lydon, who joins bassist Scott Firth along with previous members Lu Edmonds and Bruce Smith in PiL, seems to have been spending his hiatus preparing for a comeback by, uh, reading and watching the news: "Most of my influences have never really come from a musical act," he said. "It tends to be things like the poetic beat of a newscast. There's a rhythm to the way it's laid out... Movies can do that. Shakespeare and good poetry does that, and a bloody good book does that, or just a long walk." So we'll see how this turns out.

PiL begin its tour at Coachella April 16. Full dates here.

MGMT: MGMT Apologizes For "Flash Delirium"

You know that new MGMT track that leaked this week? The one that had fans either excited or in an angry uproar because it was so different? Turns out MGMT heard the latter cries of unhappiness. One half of the duo apologized for "Flash Delirium," a track nothing like the band's previous hits, in an interview with Spinner. Here's a snippet of what Ben Goldwasser revealed to the site:

"When we first wrote that song, we were laughing so hard. Andrew [VanWyngarden] just reminded me of that, that we thought it was the funniest thing we'd ever heard. And then we got used to it, it started to sound more normal. It's not a single, but we thought it was a good way to entice people to listen to the whole record. I'm sure there are plenty of people who think it's completely weird and not what they were expecting. I'm sorry."

So he's basically apologizing for the band taking their music in a different direction? Huh. Anyway, Congratulations drops April 13.

Washed Out: “Feel It All Around” (Lushlife Version)

Philadelphia rapper-producer Lushlife dropped one of 2009's more overlooked hip-hop records in Cassette City. For whatever reason, his blend of indie rock, rap, and ambient music didn't catch on, even with features from Ezra Koenig and Ariel Pink. Now, Lushlife is promoting his several dates at SXSW by releasing his version of Washed Out's "Feel It All Around." The original track remains intact except for MC replacing the dreamy vocals of the verses with his own raps. And it works really well, both as a promotional tool and as something to help brighten the upcoming weekend of rain.

You can stream or download "Feel It All Around" (Lushlife Version) at Potholes In My Blog.

Grum: "Can't Shake This Feeling" (Video)

Everyone has those days when they wake up and go "If I don't see baked beans cascading down a hot chick's cleavage today, I'm going to tattoo Justin Bieber's face onto my back as big as it will go, and then set myself on fire in the first Men's Warehouse I can find." Reader, if today is that day for you, then Grum is here to save you.

This clip for "Can't Shake This Feeling," directed by The General Assembly is unnecessarily good. It should serve as an advisory to all of the bands out there that regularly offer up substandard clips; please, don't slack off. Also, music videos about feeder porn are usually a step in the right direction.

Arms: 'EP' (Free EP)

Arms started as the solo project of Todd Goldstein, guitarist for the now disbanded Harlem Shakes. The Arms debut Kids Aflame, which came out in Oct 2009, was lo-fi and melodic, much like the songs on this EP (which is titled EP). Goldstein tells the Village Voice that “Heat & Hot Water” is about a boyfriend and girlfriend who don’t know what to do about a beast in their basement. This EP, and for that matter Kid’s Aflame, sounds (rather pleasantly) like it could have been written and recorded in one. And indeed, Goldstein says that “Arms was all me, working alone in my bedroom and doing all that agonizing over songs by myself.”

EP Track List:

01 Floaters

02 Heat & Hot Water

03 Emily Sue, Pt 2

04 Homelife

Download it at Filedropper, SendSpace or drop.io.

The Lonely Island: "Boombox" f. Julian Casablancas (Video)

The goofballs who make up the Lonely Island are still pushing their Incredibad record, which dropped more than a year ago. And this time around it's a video for "Boombox," which features Julian Casablancas on the hook. The track and its video aren't a complete waste, mostly because of Casablancas' over-the-top vocals. But I just feel like this is a rip-off of the skit on Chappelle's Show where he went around playing music for different demographics to gauge how they would react. Of course, Chappelle was joined by guys like Questlove and John Mayer as opposed to a Radio Raheem boombox, but you get my point.
