Eminem: "Beautiful" (Video)
It seems like it's a long time coming for Eminem to address the hard economic times in his hometown of Detroit (which is on the verge of total collapse due to the auto industry dying), but he does that in the video for "Beautiful." The clip is shot in empty warehouses and rundown streets, and is prefaced with facts about Detroit. The song isn't literally about Detroit however; it's about Eminem nearly quitting rap and how rough it is to be him, which, metaphorically at least, could kind of be linked to Detroit ("don't let anyone tell you you're not beautiful" goes the chorus).
"Beautiful" is on Em's Relapse, which is out now.
Michael Jackson: Video of Michael Jackson's Last Rehearsal Released by the AP
The AP has released video that they claim is the last known performance footage of Michael Jackson, reportedly taken on June 23 during a rehearsal for his O2 shows. The clip doesn't feature any singing, but it does feature a lot of dancing, which certainly brings to question the reports that Michael was too frail to walk, none the less dance, in his final days. CouldAn XMIsis, Jesu: Isis, Jesu Members Form Greymachine
Jesu frontman Justin Broadrick and Isis frontman Aaron Turner usually have more than one iron in the experimental-metal fire, so it was just a matter of time before they, um, started roasting the same piece of iron. Broadrick and Turner have teamed up, along with Jesu's Diarmuid Dalton and Head of David's Dave Cochrane, to form Greymachine. Their debut, to be titled Disconnected, is due out on August 4 via Hydra Head. And with song titles like "Vultures Descend" and "We Are All Fucking Liars," it sounds like the perfect mix for these angry, disaffected days of summer.
Disconnected track list:
01 Wolf at the Door
02 Vultures Descend
03 When Attention Just Ain't Enough
04 Wasted
05 We Are All Fucking Liars
06 Just Breathing
07 Sweatshop

Whitney Houston: "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" (Stream)
Whitney's chosen "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" (aka "The Greatest Love of All: Redux") as her comeback single, and while Whitney's voice sounds as good as it ever has, the track doesn't really seem like a radio killer. 90s pop juggernaut Dianne Warren penned this one, and it's a retread of the same kind of flaccid, overly-sentimental songwriting that conquered the charts so thoroughly in her heyday. Sure, it would be nauseating and awkward if Whitney was singing about "swag" with Auto-tuned vocals, but that doesn't mean she has to hit us with this time capsule of a song.

Grizzly Bear: Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste Talks About Summer Plans and Playing Live
After Grizzly Bear hits every music festival in Europe and North America they'll take their chamber pop to London and play a special show with the London Symphony Orchestra. The band previously played with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, an experience Droste told Pitchfork was as nerve-wracking because of the "new terrain." For the London show, which will feature Grizzly Bear for the entire performance, Droste plans on playing a set that includes songs that the band "could maybe only do with an orchestra" as well as touring favorites. Ultimately Droste aims at "an epic orchestra experience."
Droste's excitement at the prospect of playing with an orchestra is leavened by the ups and downs of the festival circuit. He can't really utter a negative word, but he says the band's music "sounds totally different when it's in a big outdoor crazy party land festival kind of sphere." In case this sounds pessimistic he catches himself and concluded, "But they are always fun for us to play."

Black Heart Procession: Rats (MP3)
"Rats" is the first single from Black Heart Procession's sixth LP, which is, of course, titled Six. It's more uptempo than most of their back catalog, but certainly not more upbeat, as you can tell by the chorus: "I can't seem to die/ And I can't stay alive." The track uses the usual Black Heart Procession template of atmospheric backing vocals and creepy organ parts, but also features a revved-up synth part that makes all the lyrics about the devil and the whores on the street even more jarring.
Six will be released on October 6 through Temporary Residence.
John Vanderslice: "Forest Knolls" (Video) with the Magik*Magik Orchestra
The Magik*Magik Orchestra is the official house orchestra of John Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone recording studio, but only recently has Vanderslice himself played with them. "Forest Knolls" from Romanian Names would seem a good choice to anyone familiar with the album, but the orchestral backing--which consists of piano, flute, drum, and four vocalists--manages to give the song a drive and insistence that the album version doesn't have. In front of it all is Vanderslice himself, who traded in the falsetto from the original for looser and more natural vocals.
Romanian Names is currently out on Dead Oceans.

Slayer: Here's Sesame Street Slayer for Your Holiday Weekend (Video)

Here's a funny video to get the holiday weekend started; someone over at Metal Injection spliced together video of Sesame Street characters playing instruments and played a Slayer song on top of it. Oscar the Grouch handles vocals (someone wisely avoided the easy Cookie Monster simile), Bert and Ernie thrash on drums, and Grover totally nails the guitar solo. Whoever did this video is a true American Hero. [Metal Injection via Daily Swarm]
Handsome Furs, Mulatu Astatke/ The Heliocentrics, Sunset Rubdown: Drowned in Sound, Irish Times Post Best Albums of '09 (So Far)
It's already July, which means that the obligatory look back at the first half of the year is well underway. Drowned in Sound and the Irish Times put their two cents in recently, and each list is comprised of just about all the bands you would expect. Both agree on Animal Collective, Fever Ray, and Dirty Projectors, and both throw in some personal favorites. The Irish Times seems to include more of a stylistic range with folks like Mulatu Astatke and Hudson Mohawke, while Drowned in Sound is more indie-centric (Sunset Rubdown and Handsome Furs both make it, as well as the gimmicky Danananananaykroyd). The "I can't believe they forgot ___!" and "Why the hell would ___ make it?" backlash is inevitable, so feel free to air your grievances in the comments. [Via: LHB]
Magnetic Fields: 69 Love Songs, Illustrated Still Working on Making Magnetic Fields Into Comics
69 Love Songs is pretty impressive as an album, but the good folks over at How Fucking Romantic are upping the ante, challenging listeners to interpret each song as a comic. Though the project has hit a slump lately after a fast start, administrators have recently posted a new comic for "Experimental Music Love" and set an end of the month deadline for new comics. To check out what's already there or find out where to send your own paper and ink interpretations, head over to the site.
