Greg Holden Interview: SXSW 2010

Greg HoldenSinger/songwriter Greg Holden is a native of Lancashire, England, and a recent transplant to New York City. His friendly folk strumming and whiskey-smooth vocals may sound familiar to music fans who also happen to be 'Private Practice' viewers, as Holden's tunes have been used in that ABC drama. Spinner recently spoke to Holden about his spontaneous move to the States and his plans for his first trip to SXSW.

Describe your sound.

I'd say anything between folk, soul and pop. I write poems and put them to melodic acoustic music. Sometimes I try to rock, sometimes I don't so much.

How did you get started playing music?

By realizing I was going nowhere and needed a goal or dream. So I listened to Bob Dylan records for a year and then decided my goal was to move to New York and be a troubadour. Somehow, amazingly, eight years later, I made it to New York. Weird.
Outasight Interview: SXSW 2010

OutasightHip-hop vocalist Outasight is often referred to as "fresh," "new" or "unique" by those who review his work, but for the Yonkers-born MC who grew up listening to his mom's records and his dad's guitar, a groove-driven take on hip-hop is simply a product of varied musical interests. With a new contract and an album in the works, 2010 is shaping up to be a big year for the self-described "musical chameleon." The artist formerly known as Richard Andrew made a name for himself with a homemade video for 'Good Evening (Dream Big),' which gained rotation after winning an MTVU contest last year. That helped Outasight earn a spot in shows with rap luminaries Ghostface Killah and Dead Prez, and a major label contract with Warner Bros. Records/Asylum Recordings, and now, as he prepares for the release of his CD, 'From Here to Eternity,' this summer and a second-consecutive trip to SXSW, the rapper and singer talked to Spinner.

How did you come up with the name Outasight?

Originally, my rap name was 'Outsight,' which was like "insightful, but outside the box." [Laughs] I was trying to be clever. Then I left New York for awhile to go back to college. When I came back to Manhattan, I hadn't seen anyone in awhile, and my friend was like "Yo, you ain't Outsight, you Outasight." I liked it. I like the soulful '70s connotation that comes with it.

Were you always into hip hop growing up?

I saw the Tribe Called Quest 'Scenario' video when I was like eight. It was so awesome, and I was sold from the get. My mom got me some records -- the Tribe album -- and I was gone. But I listen to punk rock too, so I'm kind of a musical chameleon.

Washed Out: “Feel It All Around” (Lushlife Version)

Philadelphia rapper-producer Lushlife dropped one of 2009's more overlooked hip-hop records in Cassette City. For whatever reason, his blend of indie rock, rap, and ambient music didn't catch on, even with features from Ezra Koenig and Ariel Pink. Now, Lushlife is promoting his several dates at SXSW by releasing his version of Washed Out's "Feel It All Around." The original track remains intact except for MC replacing the dreamy vocals of the verses with his own raps. And it works really well, both as a promotional tool and as something to help brighten the upcoming weekend of rain.

Teenage Bottlerocket Interview: SXSW 2010

Teenage BottlerocketTeenage Bottlerocket, featured in Alternative Press magazine as a "Band You Need to Know in 2009," is bring their classic pop-punk sound to Austin's SXSW festival. Spinner caught up with singer/guitarist Ray Carlisle to discuss the origins of the TBR name, juggling the rock star lifestyle with a day job, and why TBR is "the cutest twin band since Nelson."

How did you guys get together?

Brandon and I used to play in a band called The Homeless Wonders, and we used to play with Kody's old band, The Lillingtons, all the time. Me and Brandon used to always play together, sort of like Alex and Eddie Van Halen -- we're the cutest twin band since Nelson. Miguel was just a punk rock kid playing in bands around Laramie and thumbing through his record collection. We have the best-friend lineup ... everything just worked out.

How did you get the name Teenage Bottlerocket?

Our first guitar player, Zach, who was in the band for, maybe, three months, came up with the name. It was based on a nickname that his dad had for this car he owned in high school. We just thought that it had the edge that we were looking for as far as the excitement of the name and then explanation of the sound -- explosive youthfulness and energy. But I might change my answer to something about the Wes Anderson movie, just because that's what everybody seems to think.

Arms: 'EP' (Free EP)

Arms started as the solo project of Todd Goldstein, guitarist for the now disbanded Harlem Shakes. The Arms debut Kids Aflame, which came out in Oct 2009, was lo-fi and melodic, much like the songs on this EP (which is titled EP). Goldstein tells the Village Voice that “Heat & Hot Water” is about a boyfriend and girlfriend who don’t know what to do about a beast in their basement. This EP, and for that matter Kid’s Aflame, sounds (rather pleasantly) like it could have been written and recorded in one. And indeed, Goldstein says that “Arms was all me, working alone in my bedroom and doing all that agonizing over songs by myself.”

EP Track List:

01 Floaters

02 Heat & Hot Water

03 Emily Sue, Pt 2

04 Homelife

Coalesce, Harvey Milk: Harvey Milk, Coalesce, The Atlas Moth @ Middle East (Pics/Review)

Photo gallery and review of Harvey Milk, Coalesce, The Atlas Moth at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA ( March 9, 2010).

"How about Coalesce?  Fuck those guys.  I don't think we want them to open for us anymore."  So said Harvey Milk's Creston Spiers as he took the stage after the brutal all-out assault that Coalesce inflicted on themselves and anyone within striking distance.  Like a coiled snake Coalesce lashed out and punctured the air with their formidable fangs, the atonal roar of the band pushing Sean Ingram's anguished shrieks and screams to the upper limits.  Guitarist Jes Steineger didn't waste much time getting thoroughly acquainted with the audience, and during the third song without warning he launched straight over my head, into and onto the crowd with his guitar, still playing as he landed on the floor near crumpled PBR cans.  He would not be a stranger to the audience portion of the room as the night went on, and the abuse he laid out to his guitar would eventually leave him with a bleeding hand. Coalesce isn't a band I can see myself listening to at home much, but live they were incredibly invigorating.

Harvey Milk is probably best known for stretching out tones like industrial-strength taffy, the pauses in between the notes just as or more important than the notes themselves.  Like a lumbering brontosaurus trying to free itself from a tar pit, there is power, tension and inevitably a sinking feeling. Imagine the between breaths of a sperm whale as they leave the surface to dive to the bottomless depths of the ocean, ready to take on the giant squids in mortal combat; that's the size of pause I'm talking about.  They started out playing three new songs from their to-be released record, and these were ponderous slabs of rock power that made the sewer pipes beneath the building shiver and tremble.  The band takes some obvious crib notes from the Melvins, and like Buzzo et al they don't just wallow in one particular genre, but can play a variety of tones, tempos and styles.  Still, crushing sound is a core component no matter what the tempo, like they are attempting pile on note after note onto your chest until your lungs can't expand anymore.  Asphyxiation never felt so good.

The Atlas Moth had a bunch of guitars, a keyboard, a drummer with awesome hair and a singer with a mustache that Rollie Fingers would be proud to wax.  They also came with some negative energy caused by their trailer hitch breaking off the van on the drive down to the venue that day, coupled with equipment issues plaguing them, which fouled their mood even more. Not a bad set, but likely more enjoyable under different circumstances.

Hammer No More the Fingers: SXSW 2010

Hammer No More the FingersFresh from their first tour of the UK, Hammer No More the Fingers bassist Duncan Webster talked to Spinner about the group's trip to SXSW, which is also the band's first visit to Texas.

How did the band form?

We were all friends since we were kids and just started playing way back before high school.

How did the band get the name?

My grandfather had brought back this hammer contraption from China that held the nail in place and the catch phrase on the packaging was "Hammer No More the Fingers!"

Jacob's Ladder Interview: SXSW 2010

Jacob's LadderWhen it comes to the power-pop landscape, Miami-based trio Jacob's Ladder -- Oren Maisner, Sammy Gonzales and Brian Hernandez -- have made a habit of surrounding themselves with solid company. Since forming in 2002, they've shared stages with Fall Out Boy, The Audition and Forever The Sickest Kids, and have nearly 500 live under their belts. New Found Glory drummer Cyrus Bolooki produced their latest album, 'Ours for the Taking,' because he was a fan. But 2010 might prove to be the band's biggest year yet, as Jacob's Ladder gears up for its debut SXSW performance, followed by two months of live shows and a possible slot on the Warped Tour. Spinner caught up with bassist Sammy Gonzales before the band hit the road.

Describe your sound.

Straightforward, catchy, lots of harmonies, mixed with spacey progressions and break downs. If I had to compare us to bands, I'd say we're a good mix of Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters and Coheed and Cambria.

How did Jacob's Ladder form?

We've all known each other since we were in elementary school. Brian and Oren jammed all through the early years into high school. In high school, we were all part of a group called the Rock Ensemble. We just decided to start working together, and it's worked out pretty well so far.

Noise Beat Propaganda Interview: SXSW 2010

Noise Beat PropagandaMuch like their hometown of Mexicali, Mexico, Noise Beat Propaganda's music straddles the border between two worlds. The band's hyperactive 2009 debut EP, 'We're in Love, Yeah Right,' features songs in both English and Spanish, jumping the line between structure and noise, familiar and peculiar. Before their first trip to SXSW, Spinner talked with bass player Jorge Caro about the importance of ice cold beer and his love of Ace of Bass, MC Hammer and all things '90s.

Describe your sound.

Well, I think we always try to keep some fun and fresh taste in our sound, something to have fun with or enjoy listening to it. It's kind of a mix of danceable rock with some catchy melodies and a peculiar punk female vocal on it.

How did your band form?

Actually, our band has gone through a long list of drummers, beginning in early 2007. It was just Leonel, our guitarist, and our first drummer Ezequiel J. They were just jamming and playing around, and after that they called me to do some jamming. We decided to add one more guitar, (and) we called Alex (our rhythm guitar player). We made some tunes ... but we needed the most important thing: the vocals. We always wanted a girl on vocals. We wanted to give a fresh touch to the band. At that time, there was a friend (Ana Torres) singing in a band called Cancer Bullet ... they were playing a lot in our local scene, but they had just broken up, so we decided to call her and try her to see if she fit in the band, and she did. By the end of 2007, we had a few tunes, and we threw a party to officially present the band in 2008. Since then, the band has been playing a lot ... and we releases our debut EP (last) summer.
